Portraits of Jesus
August 3–24, 2025
“Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us…” (Luke 1:1, NIV). Four such accounts, written in the decades after Jesus’ death, were declared authoritative by the church and accepted as Scripture. These anonymous volumes that we now refer to as Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were written for distinct communities and had various aims. Like paintings of the same subject by four different artists, they each present Jesus from a particular perspective. During the month of August, we will look at each of the four gospels in turn to explore how the author saw Jesus, and why they considered him and his mission so very compelling. We will be challenged to consider our own view of Jesus, and to ask who Jesus is to us in our own time and culture.
