CHURCH  COMMUNITY NEWS

1. What We’re Doing This Month:

During February we continue our Winter Discipleship Series called “Devotion to Jesus: An Exploration of the Letter to the Philippians”. This relatively brief letter written from the Apostle Paul to the newly formed church in Philippi (in Ancient Greece) is packed with practical material that challenges us to follow Christ with our whole being. Having explored some of the context and historical background of both the letter and its author we are now attempting to develop a deeper understanding of the Letter to the Philippians and how we can apply it to our lives. All ages within our community are exploring these themes until Lent.

We begin Lent with our Ash Wednesday service on February 22, and throughout this season we will spend time reflecting on the story of our lives and sharing this with one another. We’ll look back on the ups and downs of life and consider the ways in which God has been present and at work in us, even when we might have been unaware. In all of this we will seek to grow into a deeper awareness of God’s presence in our current reality and embrace hope for the future.

2.  Annual Meeting

On Monday, February 27, at 7PM everyone is invited to attend the Cedar Ridge Annual Meeting in the auditorium which will be an annual update from our Senior Pastor, Matthew Dyer, and a financial report from our Board of Trustees. We will not have Board Member elections in this meeting as they will occur later in the year.

3. Baptism Informational Meeting

On Commitment Sunday (March 4) there will be an opportunity for baptism. If you are interested in finding out more about baptism at Cedar Ridge, please come to a brief meeting after the 11AM service on February 12 in room 202.

4. The Journey

The Journey to be held on Sunday, February 19, from 1-4PM in the barn is the best way to get an in-depth introduction to Cedar Ridge for those interested in finding out more about our church community. This discussion-based seminar creates space for meaningful conversation over food (lunch is provided) as we join fellow companions in exploring our spiritual journey at Cedar Ridge. We’ll discuss our vision, values, beliefs and overall approach to spirituality as followers of Jesus. We specifically ask that all those seeking membership first go through the Journey but all are welcome, including those just exploring as well as long-timers in our community and those who have done Journey in the past. It's especially current and relevant to what is happening at Cedar Ridge now. It's essential to read through all the material ahead of time, so pick up a copy in the commons or download it from our website.  For more information contact Laura Moffitt.

5. New Phone Numbers for Cedar Ridge!

Cedar Ridge has a new phone number, so please update your records and spread the word. Our new phone number is 301-421-5949. And here are the new staff extensions:

  • Betsy Mitchell Henning, Creative Assistant - Ext 215
  • Bryan Peterson, Pastor of Children & Youth - Ext 220
  • Elaine Chabot, Business Manager - Ext 216
  • Laura Moffitt, Director of Administration - Ext 213
  • Mark Hartley, Property and Facilities Manager - Ext 212
  • Pat Martin, Administrative Assistant - Ext 221
  • Weather Closures - Ext 228
  • Service Times & Directions - Ext 229

It has been several months since a lightning strike caused irreparable damage to our phone system. In researching our system replacement, we decided it was best to change providers. And as a result, we were issued a new phone number. We are thankful to be up and running again!

GETTING INVOLVED: MEETING NEEDS IN OUR CHURCH, COMMUNITY, AND WORLD

6. Teachers for Summer Exchange in Ipala, Guatemala

Teachers interested in participating in the ongoing exchange between our Global Engagement partners in Ipala, Guatemala and Riverdale Park, Maryland this July should contact Vernon Archer. The program focuses on teaching English at the elementary and secondary school level for two weeks in Ipala while also learning about the local culture and touring its sights.

7. Opportunities to Serve

  • Bless your church family on Sundays! Every week, we share communion, and every week, people serve by preparing the bread and juice for all of us. If you want to help with this vital behind-the-scenes work, contact Betsy Mitchell Henning.
  • If you see ‘999’ above the screens on Sunday mornings, that means we have an immediate need for helpers in children’s ministry. If interested, please step out and check at the children’s ministry desk in the Commons.
  • The children’s Ministry team is looking for a few good men (or women or teens) who would like too help children follow Jesus. Please contact Bryan Peterson or fill out a blue card at the Children’s Ministry table in the Commons.
  • Keeping the property safe and accessible in adverse weather means moving snow off parking lots and sidewalks and salting the surfaces. We have shovels, salt spreaders, snow blowers and a snow plow. If you'd like to join us on the Snow Team in keeping Cedar Ridge open and functioning, contact Mark Hartley.
  • Come join us every other Saturday (February 11 and 25)   for the Property Workdays, 8AM-noon, as our community gathers to care for our buildings and land. Contact Mark Hartley for more information.
