October 2010

What We’re Doing This Month

During October we are continuing our discipleship series “Longing for Friendship: Daring to Draw Close”. We all need friendships and especially friendships where we can be open and honest; friendships that help us heal and grow to be more like Jesus. We not only believe we can experience this but we have great hope that we can be this to others as well. We want to be a community where everyone looks out for the concerns of others and no one is alone. During this series we will work through discussion material together in our discipleship groups where there will also be a lot of time for getting to know one another to discover and deepen friendships. During the Sunday services for the first three weeks of the series we will present three different books that will be suitable for group book discussion. Each group will then choose one of these books and spend the rest of the series studying and discussing it. These book discussions will help draw us closer together and alongside we’ll also be looking at some of the issues (both personal and cultural) that can seem to help or hinder us in meeting our deepest needs for relationship.

Important Dates

October 17: Harvest Festival & Potluck (One service at 10 AM)

This will be an all-church gathering — a day to praise God for the abundance in our lives. We will celebrate the farm, including pumpkin harvest, games, and a meal together. We’ll meet for one Sunday service at 10 AM with all ages together. Please bring a main dish, side dish or dessert to share; the lunch will be outside weather permitting.
Sunday ∙ October 17 ∙  One service at 10 AM

October 21: Prayer Practice

The third Thursday of each month is an opportunity to take time to slow down from the busyness and stress of life. We engage in different methods of prayer that may help us be more deeply present to God and our lives in the present moment. All are welcome; no registration or prior experience required. No food or childcare. Contact Bill Duncan for more information.
Thursday ∙ October 21 ∙ 7- 9 PM ∙ Barn 1st Floor

October 24: Christmas Planning Workshop

Help create this year’s Advent and Christmas services. Join us for a workshop; it’s an idea session, and a chance to meet others with similar interests. Looking Forward to Advent

Sunday, November 28: Decorating & Potluck
All church potluck and decorating Cedar Ridge for Christmas

Friday, December 3: Advent Coffee House in the Barn at 7:30 PM
We will be celebrating the beginning of the holiday season with music, coffee, food and fair trade gifts to buy. The whole evening will have a special focus on Guatemala.

Dates to be Announced: Christmas Tree Orders
You will be able to order a fresh-cut Frasier Fir and pick it up at Cedar Ridge. Proceeds will go to Guatemala. This is a great way to simplify Christmas busyness.

Friday, December 24: Christmas Eve Services & Outreach Boxes
On Christmas Eve we will have two special services at 4:30 PM and 6:30 PM. Each service will last one hour and will be suitable for all ages so bring along family and friends as we celebrate the birth of Christ together. At the end of each service there will be Christmas boxes full of treats to deliver to people who have to work on Christmas Eve. The boxes will be prepared by our children and are a simple way for us to share God’s love with others.

Sunday, December 26: One service for all ages at 10 AM

Partnering to Help Children and Youth Follow Jesus

  • Nearly 60 leaders and helpers are partnering with God and families to help children and youth follow Jesus through our Sunday morning ministries. Thanks to all of the men and women who are investing themselves in our younger people! Your ministry is greatly appreciated!
  • Children’s ministry leaders, helpers, and subs are invited to a potluck lunch after the second service on Sunday, October 10. You’ll have a chance to interact with others serving the same age group as you are, offer feedback on our ministry, and give input on some plans for the future. Please signup online or at the Children’s Ministry table in the commons.
  • This month kids will be exploring how to grow in friendship with each other and with adults in our community.
  • If you’re interested in getting involved, we can always use people who are willing to fill in when our regular leaders are away. Please contact Bryan Peterson for more details, or stop by the Children’s Ministry table in the commons.

Our Community, Our Farm

We’ve had a great summer on the farm, and we’re in the fall home stretch!

October is the last full month of ongoing farm work. We’re still focusing on weeding and watering while we wait for our last batch of crops to be ready for harvesting. While we have our Harvest Festival on October 17, we’ll likely still be able to harvest food for delivery a week or two after.

With the return to school for many families, we’re not scheduling farm parties this month. However, we hope you’ll still make some time for this Cedar Ridge project by taking a couple hours to come out and keep our farm growing.

Needed work will be listed on the white board in the farm shed so schedule a night to pitch in. If you have questions or would like help, email Kirk Hoffman.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the farm’s success to date. We couldn’t do it without you.
