July 2010 Bulletin

Issue:
July 2010

What We’re Doing This Month

During July we begin a seven week series going through the book of Ephesians in the New Testament. In this letter to the newly emerging community of followers of Jesus in Ephesus nearly 2000 years ago, Paul, one of the Apostles of the early church, makes a compelling call to embrace life to the full. He sets out by explaining how much God loves us and how our oneness with God comes through the dynamic presence of the Spirit of Christ within each of us. He then goes on to challenge us to live in the power of this dynamism and to follow Jesus with our whole lives. It is a call to live and experience the Kingdom of God that Jesus declared. It is a call to courageously pursue heaven on earth.

Discipleship Group Information

As we look at sequential sections of Ephesians we will be seeking to grow together in applying it to our own lives.  Each week’s message will be accompanied by questions suitable for small group discussion or self reflection. Handouts with questions will be available in the commons and on the website under “Messages”. For further information about groups at Cedar Ridge contact Patsy Fratanduono.

Opportunities to Serve

  • Property Workdays are every other Saturday:
    July 10 & July 24, 8AM-Noon. Contact Kirk Hoffman
  • We love seeing how much Cedar Ridge enjoys Sunday morning coffee! Kirk Hoffman is looking for the cream of the crop who'd like to join the grind, brew up a storm and serve the pour. Let him know of your barista dreams!

Prayer Practice

The third Thursday of each month a small group gathers together to explore ways that help heighten our awareness of the presence of God and embrace deeper peace to carry into our daily lives. Through times of discussion, silence, guided meditation and deep breathing we center our minds, hearts and bodies on the still, small voice of the Divine within. All are welcome; no registration or prior experience required. No food or childcare. Contact Patsy Fratanduono for more information.

New Pastor of Children and Youth

Please welcome Bryan Peterson as our new Pastor of Children and Youth. Bryan and his wife Sue have been members of Cedar Ridge for the past couple of years, and he brings to the role a wealth of leadership experience, having previously worked as a pastor for more than 10 years. Bryan loves Jesus, loves Cedar Ridge and we are really excited that he has joined our staff.

Buy Coffee from Our Students

Every Sunday we have a wonderful opportunity to buy top quality, organic, shade grown and fairly traded coffee from around the world, including some sensational beans from Guatemala. The coffee is imported via a local supplier and is available for sale in one pound bags at $11 each. All proceeds go to the Middle School Guatemala fund to finance future trips and serving opportunities in Guatemala. Please stop at the table in the lobby to purchase or ask questions. Please contact Lisa Dyer  for more information.

Promotion Dates & Potluck Lunch

Students, Parents - please mark your calendars for the fall. We have scheduled our student grade promotion dates for next year: new 9th graders on August 15 and new 6th graders on August 22. Throughout the summer students should remain with their current groups. On their promotion date, students should first report to their current room and allow their leaders to ceremoniously walk them and help welcome them into their new group. If you have any questions, please email Steve Mather  for High School or Lisa Dyer for Middle School.

We are inviting everyone to a potluck luncheon in the barn on August 22 at 12:45PM. We'll share a meal and look at plans for the new school year for both Middle School and High School groups. While this is an important meeting particularly for youth parents and leaders, this will be an opportunity for everyone to connect with the teenagers in our community. Come learn what the youth have in store for next year!

Support Guatemalan Friends

From July 10 through August 2 a group of teachers will be traveling to Ipala, Guatemala to assist learning English language skills. Cedar Ridge raised $2500 to purchase educational materials for Guatemalan teachers and students. Thank you for your tremendous generosity and please continue to give by praying for that trip! Cedar Ridge is assisting local Guatemalans with funds for aid to be directed to regions impacted by the recent flooding. We also help to serve the local Guatemalan community through volunteering with St. Camillus’ food bank. For further information on these programs and other opportunities to get involved in serving with Global Engagement, contact Patsy Fratanduono.

Our Community, Our Farm

In 2008-2009, Cedar Ridge prayerfully considered the ways in which we could use our property to serve God in line with our vision. We believe our farm will provide opportunities for personal spiritual growth, for growing in authentic community and for serving each other and our neighbors.

This season we have already harvested strawberries radishes, beets, peas, peppers, green beans and spinach. And more is on the way! Come and be part of this exciting, hands-on experience.
