Creating a link to other content

When creating content (eg: story, wiki, vision document) you may want to link to content elsewhere in the Cedar Ridge website.  To do this, follow the steps below:

  1. Find the address you want to link to.*  Open the page you want to link to in your browser.  Hover your mouse pointer over the Permalink text at the bottom of the post.  In the lower part of your browser, notice the address that looks something like "http://crcc.org/node/###/".Permalink screenshot
  2. Use the Node ID portion of the address.  To link to that page, you will create a link in your content to the URL /node/### with ### replaced by the unique Node ID of the page you will link to.
  3. Create the link in your content  In the content (story, wiki, vision document, etc.) that you are creating:
    1. type the text that you want to have as your link (the text that readers will click on to go to the linked page, such as "Click here")
    2. highlight that text with your mouse
    3. click the "Insert/edit link" button (it looks like a chain link)Create Link screenshot
    4. in the Link URL box, type the address you found above (eg: /node/900)
    5. if you choose, fill in the Target, Title and Class fields
    6. click Insert
    7. Insert link screenshot

*Note:  While you could use the URL that is displayed in the Location bar of your browser, that URL is not a well-defined and static value.  The domain (www.crcc.org) could change in the future or the "pretty" URL that a page is given could change as the structure of the site changes.  These instructions explain how to find and use the Node ID, which will remain static and "unbreakable" as long as that content exists.  It is the most stable address you can use.

Hint:  While editing your content, you can look for the page you want to link to without leaving the page you are editing.  Use your browser's "New Tab" or "New Window" option to open the site in a second tab or window to locate the page you want to link to while keeping your editing window open.
